DFARS 252.225-7052 and NDAA §842 supply chain compliance rules for defense contractors 2027

By Dennis Blacksmith

Defense contractors are about to face one of the most significant supply chain compliance shifts in years. The updated DFARS 252.225-7052 and NDAA Section 842 rules will take full effect in 2027, bringing major changes to how companies must trace critical materials.

These requirements significantly expand traceability for neodymium-iron-boron and samarium-cobalt magnets, tantalum, tungsten, and advanced batteries — with the focus now extending upstream to mining, refining, and separation activities in covered countries.

One of the biggest challenges is the loss of COTS exceptions. Many companies still assume commercial off-the-shelf components remain exempt, but once these items are integrated into a defense end item, they typically lose that protection. This creates real compliance exposure for training systems, simulators, and other integrated solutions.

The process of full supply chain tracing is complex, time-consuming, and often met with supplier resistance. Companies that wait risk delays, withheld payments, or rejected deliveries when contracts are scrutinized. The situation is further complicated by the fact that different primes may have varying expectations for documentation and compliance verification, making it even harder to maintain consistency across multiple contracts.

We handle the heavy lifting through structured assessments, reasonable inquiry processes, attestation packages, and practical mitigation strategies — allowing you to focus on your core mission while reducing compliance risk.

If you’re concerned about how these rules will impact your programs, reach out for a conversation. The time to prepare is now.
